Monika Žáková
Žáková transforms monochrome images and assembles them in the form of illusory refractions of matter and colour. The surface texture of her artworks – a combination of textile and canvas – underscores the artist’s methodical approach.
The motif of folding reflects the quality of mutually valid and coexisting spaces, which denies hierarchical reading and standard categories of evaluation. In her own words, her paintings “push the boundaries between surface, space, image and object through the act of creation.” Monika Žáková creates distinctively minimalistic, meditative, clean surfaces and recalls art historical references such as the historical trompe-l’œil painting, which was essentially a form of representation that sought to mislead the eye and vision.
Monika Žáková (b. 1987, Czech Republic) lives and works in Prague, Czech Republic. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in 2012 and completed an internship at the studio of German Post-War and Contemporary painter Ralf Kerbach (b. 1956) at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. Her work is included in key private and public collections across Europe and Asia, including the Robert Runták Collection, the Pudil Family Foundation, and the Heinemann Collection.
