P6 (Yi Tai Sculpture & Installation Projects)

Double Q Gallery is pleased to present Márton Nemes’s newly created site-specific installation, Police Party 22 (2022), for the Yi Tai Sculpture & Installation Projects sector at Art Central Hong Kong 2022. The installation consists of a large stainless-steel panel with light-reflective vinyls reflecting kaleidoscopic hues from surrounding stage lights flanked on each side, transforming the space into immersive effect. Lurking below the psychedelic colour-field of expansion that is at once reminiscent of the dazzling nightclub scene and of dizzying emergency vehicle lights, a set of loudspeakers intermittently trumpets musical beats, mixing electronic tunes with rhythmic sirens.

Central to Nemes’ work is his background in industrial design and an ever-shifting, transient environment upon which he built the foundation for his highly innovative practice. Prior to moving to New York where he currently lives and works, the artist immersed himself in a mix of subcultures in the city of London, in particularly rave culture which manifests in his work as a contemporary form of escapism and social alienation. The title Police Party 22 plays guilefully with the ambiguity between emancipation and control, revelry and violence derived from the escapist counterculture of rave. Always eager to innovate using new materials and industrial production methods driven by technology, Nemes employs a mix of techniques such as PVC coating and laser-cutting, and materials such as metal wires and cargo straps. By means of disintegrating and rearranging our pictorial experience, the work appears to warp and expand into its surrounding space, creating multisensory, diverse experiences.

Márton Nemes (b. 1986, Hungary) lives and works in New York, USA. He studied at the Hungarian University of Fine Arts, later completing his Master of Fine Arts degree at the Chelsea College of Arts, London in 2018. Nemes has been selected to represent Hungary at the 2024 Venice Biennale, and selected solo exhibitions include AMPLIFIER, Elijah Wheat Showroom, New York (2023); Look into The Sun with Your Eyes Closed, acb Gallery, Budapest (2022); and Ghosting Love, Annka Kultys Gallery, London (2019). Selected group exhibitions include New Mediations, MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Arts, Debrecen (2022); Place Value: New Acquisitions, Ludwig Museum, Budapest (2022); and New Perspectives on Hungarian Abstract Art, Art Week Dubai (2022). His works can be found in numerous private and institutional collections, including Ludwig Museum and the Hungarian National Bank.
